    • 2. John , Sr2 Fox (Samuel I1 ) was born in Afton, Amherst (Now Nelson) Co., VA ABT. 1780. John died BEF. MAY 1850 in Fayette Co, VA.
      He married Lucinda (Lucy) Mathews in Amherst County, Virginia, February 17, 1800.(2) Lucinda was born in VA BET. 1780-1882. Lucinda was the daughter of ? Mathews and ? ?. Lucinda died AFT. SEP 1847 in Fayette Co, (W)VA. Lucinda (Lucy) Mathews was listed as an orphan in Amherst Co,VA. John Fox put up guardianship bond for her and married her the same day. The bond did not list who her parents were. A John Mathews was listed as a son of William Mathews and had a guardianship bond put up for him 2 years before John Fox married Lucinda Mathews. John Fox Sr. was a son of Samuel Fox I. He was born about 1780 in the vicinity of Avon, Virginia. On February 14, 1800, he obtained a license in Amherst County, Virginia, to marry Lucinda (Lucy) Matthews. The ceremony was performed on February 17, 1800.
      John and Lucinda migrated to what is now Greenbrier Co.,WV where his brother William had moved to, then to Nicholas Co.,WV, then to Fayette County, West Virginia after his son Harrison Fox migrated there. They bought 108 acres of land in Fayette County on the "Chestnutburg Road".
      John and Lucinda were the parents of ten children. John was beneficiary of the will of his father. He and his brother Bartlett, who moved to Braxton County about 1840, inherited nine acres of land which they sold to John Toms on March 12, 1810, for a consideration of 110 Virginia pounds, worth about 3.33 1/3 dollars of current money in the early 1970's. John died in Fayette County between September 1847 and May, 1850. His will, written September 1, 1847, was probated in the countyin May 1850. His wife was alive at the time the will was written.
      WILL OF JOHN FOX SENIOR
      I John Fox Senior of the County of Fayette State of Virginia a farmer do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time heretofor made; and first I direct that my body be decently intered in the grave yard on the place where I now live and that my funeral be conducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and situation in life, and as to such wordly estate as it hath plesed God to entrust me with I dispose of the same as follows. First I direct that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my decease as possibe out of the first moneys that shall come into the hands of my executor from any portion of my estate real or personal. Secondly I hereby will and bequeath to my son William M. Fox all my real estate viz 108 acres being the tract on which I now reside and on which David Martin and Harrison Fox also reside lying and being in the County of Fayette on what is called chesnutburg road also all my personal property except what is hereinafter specially devised to others the said William M Fox to support in a decent manner and take care of my wife Lucinda Fox or cause the same to be done for and during her natural life and the said WM. M. Fox to pay or furnish my three daughters Mahala Cole, Sally Comer, and Elizabeth Skaggs one cow each and to pay to my three Grand children Abigail Shanahun, Mary Shanahun, and Nancy Shanahun or the survivors of them ten dollars to be equally divided among them and paid when they shall respectively become of age also the said William M. Fox is to pay Frances Bowles the sum of six dollars and the sum of one dollar each to my four sons Harrison Fox, John Fox, Gilbert Fox and Madison Fox, as the conditions under which I make the above bequest. I direct and bequeath that my daughter Mary Jane Martin shall have all my household and kitchen furniture and that my grandson Miles Manser Fox Son of Wm. M. Fox shall have my shotgun. The said William M. Fox to keep and maintain wife as aforesaid in lieu of her dower should she so elect otherwise she is to have the remainder of my real and personal estate deducting her dower from his complying with the other conditions of this my will and I do hereby make and ordain my esteemed Son William M. Fox executor of this my last will and testament with full power to carry the same into effect. In witness whereof I John Fox senior the testator have to this my will written on one sheet of paper set my hand and seal this 1st of September 1847.

      Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of us who have subscibed in the presence of each other John T. Serratt, James G. Kincaid, Peter F. Rose, R. Dunlap, F. M.Clung. Fayette County Court May Term 1850. The last will and Testament of John Fox Senior deceased was produced in court and proven by the oaths of Robert Dunlap and Peter F. Rose two of the subscibing witnesses thereto and was ordered to be recorded.
