- HAMPTON - Earnest Harwood Robins, 79, died Friday, April 3, 2009.
Born in Newport News and a lifelong Peninsula resident, he was a 1946 graduate of Hampton High School and a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
Mr. Robins was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Alice Rowe Robins.
After working a few years for NACA Mr. Robins then joined the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, working there as a draftsman, hull designer until retiring after 42 years of service.
An avid ice hockey fan, he loved skating, both ice and roller, as well as traveling. Mr. Robins also loved Christmas and enjoyed being Santa. He would fill that role anytime he had the opportunity.
Mr. Robins is survived by his children, Sharon R. Rose and husband Ronald, Earnest H. Robins Jr., and Elaine S. Robins; sister, Evelyn Pace Robins; brother, Charles Lee Robins and wife, Diane; sisters-in-law, Annie Lollis, and Myrtle Boulden and husband, Charles; brothers-in-law, Sam Rowe Jr. and wife, Mildred, Linwood Rowe and wife, Sylvia, Herman Rowe and wife, Janie, and James Rowe; and granddaughters, Emily D. Rose and Victoria L. Rose.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church by the Rev. Garrett Bugg and the Rev. Ed Freeborn. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Downtown Hampton.
