Notes |
- George Landon Horne was born September 20th, 1918 on the farm in Sussex County He was delivered by Dr. Stoneham. Dr. Stoneham failed to send in a birth certificate to the state, so there is none on file. He attended and graduated from Waverly High School, in Waverly, Virginia in 1935. He walked to school until his senior year, until transportation was available (this was 1.5 miles each way). His first job was at the D. Pender grocery store in Waverly, Virginia. He attended Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Richmond, Va. His hobbies were baseball, horseshoes and fishing. He was a Phi Beta Kappa president. He served in the US Army in WW-II in the 10th Armored Division. He then went to OCS and was commissioned an officer and went with the Army General Hospital Corp and served in the South Pacific in New Guini and the Phillipines. He later retired as a LTC in the Army Reserve Hospital Corp. He can still, in 1992, fit in his WW-II uniforms. Landon is 5'6 and his avg weight all his life has been between 120-125 pounds and he is 5'6, with brown hair and blue eyes. He joined the insurance firm of Gibson, Moore and Sutton and retired as a partner and Corporate Secretary. Landon and his family are members of the Tabernacle Baptist Church and Landon served as Deacon, church clerk, and was on the administrative board. He should be remembered that he practiced his religion in everyday life as well as attending church regularly. Landon met his wife, Mayme Virginia Newman (Ginny), at a church forum at Tabernacle. She was living with her aunt Mamie, here in Richmond. Ginny was working at Richmond Machinery at the time. They fell in love and married within a year. Their first house was at 3314 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, Va., and paid about $11,000 back then. It should also be remembered that gas was only .25 a gallon. Landon would like to be remembered for raising two (2) exceptional, honest and Christian children in this age of temptation and moral decay. Betsy's and Justin's Father died just before 1:00am, Saturday, July 21, 2001.

- The way that he and grandmother left to get married is a classic, just like a romantic novel. On a cold, blustery, snowy 28th day of January, 1907, Grandfather, at the stroke of midnight, placed a ladder against the side of the farmhouse and grandmother climbed down to go marry Herbert. They took the horse and carriage that he had waiting through three (3) feet of snow to the train station in Waverly, Virginia. There they took a train to Halifax, NC and stayed at the Roanoke Hotel, where they were married by J. L. Fenner, Justice of the Peace on January 28th, 1907. Mrs. W. A. Sater was both the proprietress and witness. Mary Virginia Horne Howard remembers that the next morning, one of the kids went downstairs and told their mother, Ella Gertrude Booth Goodrich that Pinkie (Mary Goodrich) wasn't in her room. As the family started to search for her, her father Benjamin Taylor Goodrich, said,' there ain't no need to look for her, she's run away to get married, haven't you seen her making all these new clothes?'. Mary Virginia doesn't remember which of the kids told their mother about Pinkie (Mary) being gone. However it was the one that slept in the room with Mary Goodrich and my guess would be Stella, as they were the closest of the kids and remained so throughout life.
